New Beginnings The New Discoveries Series Book 4 edition by Matt Zachary Literature Fiction eBooks

Only once before in my life have I ever been this sorry to have read a book, or in this case, a series. Not saying there is no value in this at all, but like another reviewer stated, it felt like a kind of “bait & switch”. I feel I bought one thing and got something entirely different – or, more accurately, it turned into something different as you went along. Don’t buy this if you want a romance with an HEA or HFN ending. This starts as a sort of cute “gay for you” love story, with a writing style that is nothing special, just “ok” yet I was intrigued enough with the love story to keep coming back. Until I saw where it was going – but by then it was too late.

The problem is that what starts as a sort of sweet but predictable romance morphs by the end into a story of survival & personal redemption in the prison system. That part is very detailed and gritty, but romance it ain’t! It would have been tolerable if there would have been a “tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree” ending, with their relationship surviving & made stronger as a result, but instead the relationship just ends.

I got the first book free & it drew me in, despite the fact I found the writing just “ok”, because I wanted to read the continuation of Matt & Jamie’s love story. So I bought the other 3 books. Big Mistake, because that’s not what you get, only you don’t find that out until book 4. In a romance you expect challenges the 2 leads will work through & end up together in the end. Nobody dies here, but there is no happy ending for them as a couple, and one character virtually disappears from the story by the 4th book.

Horrible, horrible things happen to one character in the series. He made some bad choices, but paid for them 20 times over, with things going from bad to worse. It felt almost sadistic the way the rug was be pulled from under him again & again, each time he had some reason to hope. Book 4 had me so distressed, crying over what he was enduring, but I forced myself to keep going, to reach the place where finally everything would be okay. Then something happened that made me suspect it wasn’t going to be. At that point, I skipped to the end of the book to see how it ended up. What I saw made me stop reading the book. I have only done this once before in my life with a book. In this case, not only that but I deleted it & the entire series from my Kindle, and then from my Amazon account. Childish, perhaps, but I was furious. Now if only I could delete it from my mind & get back my time and the money I spent. More than the money, I am so sorry I wasted half a day of my life reading this series that left me feeling like *%$#! And I certainly wouldn't read anything else by this author I without reading extensive reviews beforehand. I feel that the same way life repeatedly pulled the rug out from under Matt in the book, this book does the same to readers.

So if you want to know exactly what happened, here it is, SPOILER ALERT: After surviving date rape, Matt is left by his lover, falls into alcoholism & ultimately homelessness. Matt finally goes to AA, starts turning his life around & Jamie takes him back. But then Matt is arrested & convicted of involuntary manslaughter, following a bar fight in which someone died. Though Matt had started the fight, he didn't strike the blows that killed the guy, but was those who actually did so lied & blamed Matt for all of it. He goes to jail & after 17 months waiting for trial, is sentenced to 5 years with time served. So he only has about 3 years to serve. He endures incredible hardship in jail, sexual abuse, bad food, dehumanizing conditions, but through everything Jamie stands by him, is his rock, his only comfort. There are opportunities for sex in prison but Matt resists unless they are basically forced on him, wanting to be faithful to Jamie. Then, in the middle of book 4, Jamie writes him a “dear John” letter, just like that, telling him he’s moved on! That’s where I flipped to the end & found out that they never get back together. I skimmed enough to see that Matt eventually moved on too, found another guy in prison, apparently had that one break his heart too, then found someone else by the time he was released at the end. But the new guy was in for 2 more years, kind of easy to see that going bad very easily. It ends with Matt released, hopeful to start a new life.

In the end, this may be a very gritty portrait of prison life & probably realistic about what happens to many relationships if one partner goes to prison. The problem was, that wasn't what I signed up for. END SPOILER ALERT

To give credit where due: The prison stuff was so detailed that I have to believe the writer knew what he was talking about. This could have value as a standalone gritty portrayal of someone who goes to prison, survives and comes out a better, stronger person, and also as an indictment of the criminal justice and dehumanizing conditions in the prison system. Part of what upset me was that the dehumanizing treatment Matt went through in jail/prison & all I could think is that no one deserves that, guilty or not, to be treated like this, as if they have no value at all. But as a romance series? Sorry, but no.

New Beginnings The New Discoveries Series Book 4 edition by Matt Zachary Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Breaking this simple story into FOUR sections is truly a Rip Off to the nth degree. If the writing was better, if the story line flowed and/or if it didn't seem to be written stereotypically I might not have felt so violated by the pretense that this was a something of value to read. The underlying "dominance" intrigue theme that plagued the main character was ill conceived as was his actually winding up in jail in the first place. The author spent the whole first book creating a character portrait that didn't even relate to the other three books in the series. The first book of the series was light and easy albeit "trite". All four of these novellas should have cost $2.99 total if that much. I will never purchase another book from this author or any other author that preys on his own brethren.
I thought that the series was very good until this book. In the end it was rushed and it was not as well written. The series itself is good until you get to the end of the third book and this book as a whole.

NEC
The book was good the only thing is that it leaves you wondering about after Matt got out? what happens between him and J.J.? does he ever see Jamie again? Is there another book? The book just leaves you hanging.
I was disappointed in New Beginnings. There were many opportunities for the writer to explore the characters feelings and insights into his self discovery and I felt the writer missed his chance to let the reader in.
EVEN THOU THIS SERIES WAS IN REAALY SHORT FORM I REALLY ENJOY IT I WISH THERE WAS A 5TH BOOK SO I CAN FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS WITH MATT AND JAMIE THIS BOOK KINDA OF LEFT YOU HANGING ONCE HE WAS RELEASE FROM PRISON
I truly enjoyed the entire series. I need more. I need to know what happens with Matt after J.J. gets out of jail. I do hope that the author will write another series about them.
I admire the perseverance of the main character. He was wronged in so many ways but he kept his faith in love. If you can go through what he did and keep his faith. This is a strong man! I applaud him and the author.
